CCSC Cruisers » Seamanship Weekend
Seamanship weekend of boating activities to prepare ourselves for the forthcoming sailing season, rid ourselves of the winter non-sailing cobwebs and welcome newbie sailors onto the water.
The weekend will focus on:
- Anchoring techniques and practice in different situations
- MOB recovery techniques and practice (including using the RNLI dead weight dummy aka "Dunk" or "dead Fred")
- Pontoon approaches and departure practice aka "pontoon bashing", but hopefully less of the bashing!
- Lifejackets and life rafts (we have a lifejacket and life raft to demo inflating)
- Opportunity to get some of the group together for an evening meal Sat night
Starting at the club house Sat morning with a briefing at 9.30am and lifejacket demonstration, then sailing, MOB and anchoring practice activities in and around Portland Harbour and Weymouth Bay for the rest of Sat and Sun morning, inc berthing practice and life raft inflation demonstration at the Academy. No boat required, but crew participants will need to source or borrow a lifejacket or buoyancy aid.
Sat evening, we will have a £16.50 per head 'Sailor Supper' menu at the Academy in the newly refurbished Twenty12 room (formerly the Café), which has been fully refurbished and decorated with items and memorabilia from the 2012 Olympics, giving it a great 'sailing club' atmosphere. The main course will be Homemade meat Lasagne (or Vegetarian Lasagne), served with garlic bread & salad, with Summer Berry Tiramisu for dessert. Alcoholic drinks OR tea, coffee and soft drinks can be bought with the meal.
Reserved pontoon berthing (with a discount) will be available in Portland BoatFolk marina for those boats that want to tie up overnight (see booking details).
The weekend is fully flexible, so people can come to some or all activities, and choose whether to be on the water and/or eat out Sat night at the group meal. There are 3 tickets available to book:
- Reservations for a Sailor Supper at the Academy on Sat night - (website allows more than 1 ticket to be purchased by individuals)
- Boats wanting to pre-book berthing at Portland BoatFolk marina Sat night (benefiting from a group discount off bookings)
- Individuals taking part in the on-water seamanship part on at least one of the two days (free ticket) - numbers help us plan the number of boats to have on the water
Note: This will also be an opportunity to get Newbie crew out on the water, following the Skipper and Crew meet up event evening on 12th March, so Skippers please indicate on the drop down box if you are able to take any new crew out
